Privacy Policy
Theory Practice (“Theory Practice”, “we”, “us”) builds an adaptive music theory learning app for students, parents, and teachers. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
1. Information we collect
- Account information — your name, email address, password (stored hashed), and, for teacher plans, the seat usernames you create.
- Learning data — your chosen exam board and grade, practice answers, mistakes, scores, streaks, and progress. This is what powers the adaptive engine and your mistake book.
- Payment information — handled by our payment processor (e.g. Stripe or the Apple/Google app stores). We never see or store your full card number.
- Usage & device data — basic analytics such as pages viewed, features used, device type, and approximate region, used to keep the service running and improve it.
- Support messages — anything you send us by email or in-app.
2. How we use your information
- To provide the app: deliver lessons, mock exams, the AI tutor, and sync your progress across devices.
- To personalise practice through the adaptive engine.
- To process subscriptions and prevent fraud.
- To send essential service messages (and, only with your consent, product updates).
- To understand and improve how the app is used.
- To meet legal obligations.
3. Children’s privacy
Many of our learners are under 18, and some are under 13. We are GDPR-aligned and follow a COPPA-style approach to children’s data:
- Accounts for children under 13 are expected to be created and consented to by a parent, guardian, or teacher.
- Parent and teacher accounts have visibility into, and control over, the activity of the children linked to them.
- We collect only the data needed to run the learning experience, and we never sell children’s data or use it for behavioural advertising.
4. How we share information
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with:
- Service providers that help us operate — hosting, payment processing, analytics, email delivery, and the AI provider that powers tutor explanations. They may only use the data to perform services for us.
- Teachers and parents linked to a student’s seat, who can view that student’s progress and mistake book.
- Legal authorities where required by law, or to protect our users and our rights.
- A successor in the event of a merger or acquisition, under the same protections described here.
5. Data retention
We keep your account and learning data for as long as your account is active. When a teacher resets a seat, the previous student’s history is preserved on the teacher account unless deletion is requested. You can ask us to delete your account and associated data at any time.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under the GDPR and CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to withdraw consent or object to certain processing. To exercise any of these, contact us at [email protected].
7. Security
We use industry-standard measures — encryption in transit, hashed passwords, and access controls — to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and to notify you of any material breach as required by law.
8. International transfers
Theory Practice operates globally, so your data may be processed in countries other than your own. Where we transfer data internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards.
9. Cookies
We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember your language preference, and measure usage. You can control cookies through your browser settings.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will revise the “last updated” date above and, for material changes, give notice in the app or by email.
